The Voice of Prophecy II

The gift of prophecy is a powerful manifestation of the Holy Spirit. It is not just about predicting the future but about revealing God’s heart, will, and encouragement to His people. The gift is often intertwined with other spiritual gifts like the Word of Knowledge, Word of Wisdom, faith, healing, and miracles—working together to build up the Church.

Why Prophecy Matters

Apostle Paul encourages us in 1 Corinthians 14:39, “So, my friends, be eager to prophesy…” He knew how powerful and edifying prophecy could be when it comes from the Lord. Through this gift, God speaks to His people, guiding, warning, strengthening, and bringing direction to individual lives and the Church.

Be Cautious: Not All Prophecies Are From God

Today, many claim to bring prophetic words, but we are called to test every prophecy. Paul wrote to Timothy in 1 Timothy 1:18, encouraging him to hold on to the prophetic words spoken over him to fight the good fight. However, before we follow a prophetic word, we must discern its source—whether it is from God, human emotion, or even deception.

How to Judge a Prophetic Word

Scripture allows us to judge prophecy (1 Corinthians 14:29). Here are biblical ways to test if a prophecy is truly from the Lord:

  1. Inner Witness: Do you feel a peace or confirmation deep within you when you hear the word?
  2. Confirmation: Has God already been speaking to you about this through prayer or Scripture?
  3. Spiritual Effect: Does it draw you closer to God or distract you from Him?
  4. Christlike Nature: Does the message align with the teachings and character of Jesus?
  5. Freedom in the Spirit: A prophecy from God will not bind you in fear or confusion.
  6. Humility, Not Pride: God’s word uplifts but never flatters to inflate ego.
  7. Fruit of the Spirit: Does it produce love, peace, and joy—or does it bring suspicion or bitterness?
  8. Clarity, Not Confusion: God is not the author of confusion (1 Corinthians 14:33).
  9. Biblical Alignment: It must agree with the Bible and the teachings of the Church.
  10. Source’s Character: Do the people giving prophecies live lives that reflect Jesus?
  11. Fulfillment: Have past words from this person come to pass?

Be Patient for Fulfillment

Sometimes prophetic words take time to be fulfilled. As Jesus told His disciples in Acts 1:7, “It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by His own authority.” Our job is to believe, wait patiently, and stay faithful.

Be Encouraged

Prophecy is a precious gift. But as with all spiritual things, we must approach it with wisdom, prayer, and discernment. When it is truly from God, it brings life, clarity, direction, and power.
