Steps to Hear the Voice of God – II

Sitting quietly to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit is a vital step in learning how to recognize and respond to God’s guidance. We need to practice listening. This isn’t just an act—it’s a process.

“… be silent, and I will teach you wisdom.” – Job 33:33b

We often think we know what’s best for our lives, but Scripture reminds us:

“… for we know only in part.” – 1 Corinthians 13:9

The Holy Spirit, who knows all things, will guide us into all truth:

“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth…” – John 16:13a

Truth isn’t limited to spiritual matters—it applies to your job, relationships, decisions, purchases, and future. Deception is everywhere, and the Spirit helps us navigate through it.

“For God alone my soul waits in silence, for my hope is from him.” – Psalm 62:5

How to Practice Stillness to Hear God

  1. Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and calm your heart.
  2. Focus on God and expect to hear His voice—even if it doesn’t happen the first time.
  3. Repeat the practice daily. As you grow in it, you will start recognizing His gentle voice within.

“He said to me: Mortal, all my words that I shall speak to you receive in your heart and hear with your ears…” – Ezekiel 3:10

Stillness creates intimacy with God. You begin to receive His wisdom, direction, and comfort.

Why Stillness Matters

Not learning to quiet your mind can:

  • Cause you to miss God’s leading
  • Prevent you from knowing His voice
  • Rob you of God’s best for your life

“Be still, and know that I am God!” – Psalm 46:10

Simple Stillness Techniques

  • Ask the Holy Spirit for help, then meditate on God’s Word.
  • When your mind wanders, gently bring it back to the Word or a picture of Jesus.
  • Start with 5 minutes daily, gradually increasing the time.
  • Mutter Scripture to still your thoughts and invite peace.

“Be silent, all people, before the LORD: for he has roused himself from his holy dwelling.” – Zechariah 2:13

Combine Stillness with Other Spiritual Practices

  • After praise and worship, sit silently and listen.
  • After Bible reading, be still and reflect.
  • After praying in tongues, enter into silence.
  • After petitions or intercessions, remain quiet to discern God’s voice.

“Guard your steps when you go to the house of God; to draw near to listen is better than the sacrifice offered by fools…” – Ecclesiastes 5:1

A Word of Caution

Don’t sit in silence for more than 2 hours daily. Though it can be addictive in a positive way, overdoing it can make you neglect your responsibilities.

The anointing within makes silence easier, and practicing daily will help you carry peace and clarity into everyday life.

God Speaks Even in Busy Moments

While God can speak during busyness or confusion—because He is sovereign—consistent stillness prepares you to hear Him regularly.

Practice silence.
Practice listening.
And you will grow in your ability to hear the voice of God.
