Inquire of the Lord

Inquiring of the Lord in the things we need to do is one of the best habits we can build in our life. It is crucial not only for our prayer-life but also for our daily walk on earth. If there is anyone who knows everything, it is God—the Holy Spirit who dwells within us. Turning to the Lord for direction, even in simple matters, is the most reliable way to walk wisely.

“I will instruct you and teach you the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.” (Psalm 32:8)

Allow God to be the Master of your life by seeking Him for everything. Don’t let self-sufficiency or experience rob you of this kind of supernatural, Spirit-led living. Too often we are too busy to pray or too eager to act before consulting God. And then, after our plans fail, we ask God to bless them. That is not the right way.

The Holy Spirit is ready to guide us in what to do and what to avoid. In every situation, consult the Spirit of God within you.

A Biblical Example: David

When David returned to his camp and found it plundered and his people taken captive, he didn’t act immediately out of anger or sorrow. Instead, he sought the Lord first:

“David inquired of the LORD, ‘Shall I pursue this band? Shall I overtake them?’ He answered him, ‘Pursue; for you shall surely overtake and shall surely rescue.'” (1 Samuel 30:8)

David was willing to hear either a ‘Yes’ or a ‘No’. He trusted God’s direction more than his own instincts. Many times, we avoid asking God because we are afraid His answer might oppose our desires. But as Fr. Augustine Vallooran VC once said, “If God does not give it to you, do not go and take it from the devil!”

David obeyed the Lord, pursued the enemy, and recovered everything. Not a single person or possession was lost. In fact, they gained much more than they had before. When we inquire of the Lord, He not only guides us but blesses us abundantly.

David’s Ongoing Dependence on God

David continued this pattern throughout his life:

“David inquired of the Lord, ‘Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will you give them into my hand?’ The Lord said to him, ‘Go up, and I will give them into your hand.'” (1 Chronicles 14:10)

Because he constantly inquired of the Lord, David never lost a battle. Scripture says:

“The fame of David went out into all lands, and the LORD brought the fear of him on all nations.” (1 Chronicles 14:17)

Solomon’s Example

When Solomon asked the Lord for an understanding heart, it pleased God:

“Because you have asked this… I give you what you have not asked, both riches and honor all your life; no other king shall compare with you…” (1 Kings 3:11-13)

Learn to Ask Daily

Learn to consult with the Holy Spirit daily. Initially, you may struggle to discern His voice. But as you continue to inquire, you’ll begin to recognize His leading. Let your prayer be:

  • “Should I…?”
  • “Do You want me to…?”
  • “What is Your opinion, Lord?”
  • “Is this Your will?”

Inquire of the Lord—and you will walk in His wisdom, enjoy His protection, and fulfill His purpose.
