Hindrance to Discern God’s Voice

1. Not All Voices Are God’s Voice

As there are hindrances to hearing God’s voice, there are also hindrances to discerning His voice. You can be sitting with the devil and not realize it. Wrong relationships, principles, and movements can make us spiritually blind and deaf. Only when we abide in Jesus Christ and live by His principles can we stay safe.

“Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life,'” (John 8:12).

2. Wrong Relationships Can Cloud Discernment

When Samson met Delilah, although anointed by God, he couldn’t recognize her as a threat. His emotions blinded him to the truth.

“After this he fell in love with a woman in the valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah,” (Judges 16:4).
“No razor is to come on his head,” (Judges 13:5).

Even though Samson likely sensed red flags, his desires overpowered his spiritual senses. Wrong relationships weaken our ability to hear the Holy Spirit clearly.

3. Movements That Are Not of God

Involvement in movements that are not of God can lead us into spiritual deception. Once inside, we may start supporting things God never endorsed, all while thinking we’re doing right. This blinds us to the Holy Spirit’s voice.

4. Worldly Principles Dull Spiritual Sensitivity

Worldly teachings may appear wise but can be spiritually harmful. Not everything “good” is from God.

“For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery,” (Galatians 5:1).

5. Toxic Attitudes Create Spiritual Noise

Anxiety, fear, bitterness, lust, pride, guilt, ambition, and a judgmental spirit can clutter our spiritual life. These attitudes can block us from hearing God clearly and make us vulnerable to false voices.

“But whoever hates another believer is in the darkness, walks in the darkness, and does not know the way to go, because the darkness has brought on blindness,” (1 John 2:11).

6. Stay Rooted in Christ

Stay plugged into Jesus Christ alone. Live according to the principles He taught. Being influenced by worldly spirits—such as lust, pride, or bitterness—leads to confusion and opens us up to deception, even if we once clearly heard God’s voice.
