In our walk with God, while learning to hear His voice, we must also learn to discern the enemy’s voice. Satan—called the accuser, tempter, and liar—has a voice of his own. He speaks to both God and man, sowing doubt, fear, and confusion to lead believers away from truth.
“When he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” (John 8:44)
How the Enemy Speaks
Satan has been speaking since the Garden of Eden. He whispered to Eve and tempted Jesus. He continues to whisper lies today, often disguising them as our own thoughts or emotions.
- He speaks through fear, envy, pride, lust, confusion, and discouragement.
- He plants suspicions in our minds against God and others.
- He uses partial truth to mislead, just as he twisted Scripture to tempt Jesus.
“They will not follow a stranger, but they will run from him because they do not know the voice of strangers.” (John 10:5)
The Danger of the Second Voice
Often, after hearing the still, small voice of the Holy Spirit, we may immediately hear a second voice—the enemy’s. That second voice casts doubt, encourages rashness, or sows division.
Examples:
- The first voice affirms your identity: “You are My beloved Son.”
- The second voice questions: “If you are the Son of God…”
“Your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ.” (2 Corinthians 11:3)

How to Discern the Voice of the Enemy
- Know the Word – Jesus defeated Satan by quoting Scripture.
- Test the Spirit – God’s voice brings peace, not confusion.
- Examine the Fruit – The Holy Spirit produces love, peace, self-control; the enemy breeds restlessness and sin.
- Stay in Humility – Pride opens doors to deception.
- Seek Godly Counsel – Mature Christians can help discern voices.
“Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7)
Recognizing Accusation vs. Conviction
- The Holy Spirit convicts gently, leading to repentance and freedom.
- Satan accuses, leaving you in shame and despair.
“There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 8:1)
What To Do When You Hear the Enemy’s Voice
- Do the opposite of what the enemy suggests.
- Speak the truth of God’s Word aloud.
- Pray immediately, rejecting the voice of lies.
- Stay accountable, especially when facing temptation or confusion.
Final Reflection
Satan won’t always roar; often, he whispers. He may come like a lamb, not a lion. But the mature believer knows how to recognize and resist him. Stay rooted in the Word, tuned to the Spirit, and you will walk victoriously.
“Like a roaring lion your adversary the devil prowls around, looking for someone to devour. Resist him, steadfast in your faith.” (1 Peter 5:8-9)
