Speaking Through Others

God’s Voice in Everyday People

The Holy Spirit speaks to us through others. Since the beginning, God has been using people to deliver His message. Our success in life often depends on how well we can discern what God is saying to us through others.

When we say “others,” we don’t only mean church leaders, preachers, or counselors. God can speak through anyone — even ordinary people in everyday situations.

Biblical Example: Naaman’s Healing

One beautiful example from the Bible is the story of Naaman, a mighty commander of the army of the king of Aram. Though powerful, Naaman suffered from leprosy. God wanted to heal him, and the message came through an unlikely source — a slave girl.

“… If only my lord were with the prophet who is in Samaria! He would cure him of his leprosy.” (2 Kings 5:3)

Naaman listened to the slave girl’s words and followed her advice. That simple act of humility led to a chain of events that ended in his miraculous healing.

Overcoming Pride to Receive God’s Word

Initially, Naaman resisted the prophet Elisha’s instructions. He had his own expectations and nearly missed his miracle. But God once again spoke — this time through Naaman’s servants.

“Father, if the prophet had commanded you to do something difficult, would you not have done it? How much more, when all he said to you was, ‘Wash, and be clean’?” (2 Kings 5:13)

Naaman obeyed, and as the Bible records:

“His flesh was restored like the flesh of a young boy, and he was clean.” (2 Kings 5:14)

God Still Speaks Through Others Today

Jesus Himself confirmed that the Spirit speaks through His people:

“For it is not you who will speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.” (Matthew 10:20)

We must walk closely with God to discern when He is speaking through others. The enemy can also speak through people — even those close to us.

Discerning the Voice of God

In Matthew 16:17, Jesus praises Peter:

“Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father in heaven.”

Yet just a few verses later, Jesus rebukes Peter:

“Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me…” (Matthew 16:23)

This teaches us that anyone can be a vessel — for God or for the enemy — depending on the moment and their walk with the Spirit.

The Final Test: God’s Word

Whatever is spoken through others must never contradict the Holy Scriptures, the Living Tradition, or what the Holy Spirit has already spoken in your spirit.

“Hold to the standard of sound teaching that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.” (2 Timothy 1:13)
