Understanding the Purpose of Tongues and Interpretation
When it comes to edifying ourselves, it is not necessary to understand what we are speaking or praying, because as we pray, we are built up, and we can see the fruit of our prayer. However, the Bible does say, “One who speaks in a tongue should pray for the power to interpret,” (1 Corinthians 14:13).
The Supernatural Gift of Interpretation
The spiritual gift of the interpretation of tongues is the supernatural manifestation of the Spirit of God using one’s vocal organs to give utterance in a known language, revealing the meaning of the words spoken in tongues. This interpretation can come through our thoughts, visions, or the audible voice of the Spirit.
How the Gift of Interpretation Works
When you speak in tongues and stop, an utterance may come in your known language. The interpretation of tongues works as the Holy Spirit gives utterances that reflect the meaning of the tongues spoken.
The Role of Others in Interpretation
The interpretation can also come through others. In a group setting, one person may speak in an unknown tongue, inspired by the Holy Spirit, and another person may receive the interpretation. The interpretation may come through visions, thoughts, or the realm of seeing and hearing.
Interpretation: Not a Word-for-Word Translation
The interpretation we receive is not a word-for-word translation but an overall understanding of the message or the essence of what was said. It can sometimes be shorter or longer than the tongues spoken.
Biblical Example: Daniel’s Interpretation of the Writing on the Wall
In the Book of Daniel, the writing on the wall was interpreted by Daniel. This example illustrates how the interpretation can expand beyond a simple translation, providing deeper meaning.
The Relationship Between Tongues, Interpretation, and Prophecy
The gift of speaking in tongues, combined with the gift of interpretation of tongues, equals prophecy. This means that when the words spoken in tongues are understood, they become a revelation to us.
